This cement hopper was one of the older styles the Alaska Railroad used . I found pictures of these on John's Alaska Railroad website. Using the picture and the help of a friend at my loco train shop, we came up with an appropriate model to use. The Intermountain 59 Ft 4-bay cylindrical with round hatches hopper (#85-40299). Randy Thompson sent me pictures from his collection to help me to come up with the best look to these cars. I had to kitbash it to come up with the right looking prototype. So after cutting the ends up and rearranging the parts, it turned into the prototype look I was looking for. I needed to collect a variety of different decals for the project which included decals sets from Randy Thompson's collection, Microscale (wheeling inspection plates, & ACI plates), Champ (lube plates and 4 inch black stripes). I painted the hoppers with white (Scalecoat II) paint then decaled the cars and used Model Master Gloss Lacuer Overcoat to seal the decals. |
