Herrin 1800 horse -unit # 02 and 1800 #06
Herrin Note the size of the yellow tape measure. You can see the valve springs and fuel supply / return tubes. Camshaft at the right with 3 roller rocker arms per cylinder riding on the lobes.

Also known as EMD engines. went to "EMD" school at LaGrange during World War 2. Diesel engines were replacing steam in ships and on the rails.
Herrin Rebuilt 5-76 at the Paducah shops in Kentucky
Left is back of the loco with massive air compressor, fuel, oil and coolant pumps and other life support devices direct coupled to engine. At right is the generator section, right mid top is the roots type air blower one on each side that "sweeps" the cylinders clean up through the exhaust valves . Covering the engine at bottom are the fold down cat walks that you stand on to service the top of the cylinders. Behind the catwalks are the piston connecting rod access doors and above those are the individual air box covers for access to the scavenging air boxes and cylinder bottom air ports. The engine drives the massive generator that drives the individual "traction motors" that put the effort to the wheels and the rails ! On top of the generator is the smaller "exciter " generator that feeds the field magnetism of the main generator and on the back end of the exciter is a squirrel cage type fan that blows through and cools the generators. the cabinet behind the generators is full of heat element type resistance grids used in controlling the electrical monster.
Herrin Looking into the scavenging air box and through the port windows at a piston. Pistons are about 8 inch Dia. as I recall. When the piston approaches bottom of stroke the piston top clears ports opening them allowing air sweep through cylinder and out exhaust valve foursome. Air boxes are nasty as there is lots of oil and exhaust slobber here. Detroit 2 cycle engines (slobberin screamin Jimmies !) are dirty and have not been made for quite some years as the they cant meet EPA clean air requirements. As with all 2 cycle engines they worked best if you slam your hand in the door and run em like you are real pissed. They go like a scalded dog when you wring the last 200 RPM out of them.
Herrin Looking backward past the left bank blower, 8 cylinders and at the old Ship Creek power plant. Square frame on top of blower would hold 2 air filter elements, one on each side.

Herrin Locomotive 1806 at the back end with compressor section and engine life support components. These two old girls have seen Alaska from Seward to Whittier and Fairbanks in all weather and for many years. Wonder how many Moose Caribou and other critters they have mangled ? Sad to see them like this. They were handsome shiny Gold and Blue proud fire breathing monsters tugging the people and supplies through the northland.
