imageThe remains of this car look to be of a Hart Convertible Gondola in the MP A8 mile. These cars had steel frames and wooden sides. These cars had drop bottom doors so it could dump either on the out side of the rail, or inside depending on what the load was. The Alaska Railroad had many of these cars dating from the Panama Canal and the construction era of the Alaska Railroad. Many hauled coal in the early days from the mines this branch served, ironically many were dumped along the same grade they hauled fill for, and the coal that was mined. I don't know how many are along the grade, but I have counted 20 plus. 04/24/2014.
