The Loop was eliminated in the mid 1950s, but the new route proved
equally
spectacular. The new line makes a neat switch back turn in
front of Bartlett
Glacier. The grade here is three percent, the steepest on
the railroad, but the
new diesels navigate it daily without incident. As for the
railroad, they liked
the idea: no towering trestles, no heated tunnels, no snowsheds
to maintain.
