From the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, "This locomotive first served in the Persian Gulf Command during World War II. It was sent to Alaska as surplus. After serving in Alaska, this locomotive went to the Smithsonian before finding its way to us. Our mission is never to make vehicles operational again, but rather it is just to keep them in one piece and have them look good for viewing by the museum public. We gave civilian contractors on post who do work for us and they cleaned it up and painted it, which is really all it needed. Its continued preservation has it staying under cover in our railroad section. The official Transportation Corps colors that you refer to is mostly black with white lettering, That was the colors it had during World War II.
