Whittier tunnel to close Thursday night for repairs -12/17/14

WHITTIER -- The tunnel taking vehicle and train traffic to and from the port town of Whittier will be closed Thursday night. Officials with the Alaska Department of Transportation say in a release that the closure is necessary to make repairs to the rail line running through the tunnel.

WHITTIER - A big-budget feature film is set to begin production in the tiny Southcentral community of Whittier in January, city officials and producers announced Friday. The film, “Hunter Killer,” appears to be on track to be the largest production in Alaska history.

Volunteers from the Engine 557 Restoration Company, an Alaska nonprofit corporation, are working on the "restoration to operation" of an Alaska Railroad S-160 class 2-8-0 steam locomotive built in 1944 and originally used by the U.S. Army during World War II. The Alaska Railroad Corp. plans to operate the locomotive on excursions to Portage during the summer.
