ARRC hopper solicitation - 12/17/17 |
The Alaska Railroad Corp. has a solicitation for 90 used 100 or 110 ton hoppers. An anonymous source says they will be used for an export coal train with a requirement of 400,000 to 500,000 tons. If you recall the ARRC decided to get rid of hoppers when the international coal market went soft. “They owed $4,000 per car, and when coal went away, they decided to sell them. At that time though, coal was down nationwide and there were hoppers stored everywhere. I don't know what they sold them for, but it could not have been much. At the same time, the UP had leased hoppers to ARR, which were not being used and were in storage, in Seward. ARR had tried to return them, but being the older, steel hoppers, UP did not want them back, and paid ARR to store them. They were making money doing absolutely nothing! ARR decided to buy those to keep the north end coal turn running without the aluminum hoppers.” . |
