Patrick Durand says of this photo, "Believe this photo is from Seward at the base of Mount Marathon. The Speeder A does not appear on the ARR rosters so far. The radiator is not a Ford, have seen no mention of it previously."
From Don Marenzi, "ARR speeder "A" was one of eight "A" through "I" Fairbanks Morse model 40 speeders on the Alaska Railroad. I don't know when they were acquired or retired. F-M was building speeders by the late 1920's; they acquired the Sheffield line of speeders (not sure what date of that acquisition was). This car has a very early style of wheels. I think the enclosed body may have been built by the Alaska Railroad."
