- On September 24, 1945 Clayton Tinkham captured former Panama Mogul #610 class
M2 still in service at Anchorage. Built as 5 foot gauge for the ICC/Panama
by Alco/Brooks in January of 1906 this locomotive and sisters were shipped
to Alaska in 1917 for the Alaska Engineering Commission. The drivers were regauged
by installing extra wide tires that moved the flange 1.75 inches inside. This
made them very rough riders over grade crossings and switches because the wheels
stuck out further than the rest of the train and caught every pebble and ice
chunk left behind. Upon completion of AEC construction they were transferred
to the Alaska Railroad roster in January 1922.
