#562 at the Birchwood deadline The lowest numbered S-160 built by ALCO was USATC 1600. When new, it operated at Camp Claiborne on the military training railroad. After WW-2, the Alaska Railroad purchased it as war surplus and numbered it ARR-562. As delivered, it was a standard export model with no bell, no power reverse, and no generator. The photo below is at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana at the beginning of its life. Above is a photo from the end of its operating life. The piston is on the running board as it had been removed when the locomotive was moved dead to await disposal. It was the only ALCO built S-160 that the ARR owned, all the others were built by Baldwin. USATC 1600 was a movie star and if one looks carefully it can be seen in fleeting appearances in the Camp Claiborne scenes in the video found here. |
