Number 404 at Eklutna in1949.  "The 400 class was originally the 500 class.  They were renumbered as the 400 class some time after 1942, I think.  You actually have  a picture of another member of the 400 class, #502.  That particular picture was taken before they were renumbered."  Luke Smith, Brookline, MA Number 404 (builder number 7877) was built Lima Locomotive for the U.S. Army in February 1942.  The Alaska Railroad acquired it in 1946-47.   Alaska Railroad photo, Jack Klingbeil Collection
