From the Jack Klingbeil collection we bear witness to 557 under steam in the Fairbanks engine house. Yes indeed it's 557 and it has a snow plow mounted to the pilot. Back then snow plows could be moved from locomotive to locomotive. Honestly I don't think I have ever seen 557 with a snow plow.
On the far right there is one of the ex-Rio Grande gondolas and the top of a troop sleeper or kitchen car. There isn't a date noted but if I had to guess it's sometime between 1945 and 1952. The photos I've seen of 557 around 1952 show her cleaned up for passenger service. Of course this could be later than 1952.
This is a wonderful photo that really captures the look and feel of Alaska Railroad steam, you can almost hear the locomotive.
