ARR 1000, an ALCO RS1 builder's number 71319. 1000 was bought new in 1944 for the Alaska Railroad, more specifically to be used on the new Whittier Branch at first. This signaled the beginning of the transition period on the ARR.

1000 was retired in 1973 and not long after donated to the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry. 1000 was moved to the old museum location in 1973 in Palmer where the fairgrounds are now. 1001 was scrapped in the early 1970s.

Sometime in the mid 1960s the 1000 and 1001 had their rear hoods chopped down for visibility reasons since they were regulated to yard service at the time. The 18xx GP7L units had their noses chopped and had the same front windows as seen here.

The cab flooring looked a little crispy and I didn't want to walk all over to minimize damage. Also some of the engine doors didn't want to open so I wasn't able to get engine photos, but for those that are wanting to build an ARR RS1, these images should help. I myself have an undecorated model of this locomotive that I plan to detail into the 1000.

The 1000 is pretty intact for what's there though the control stand and cab are missing pieces and parts. I didn't check the traction motor cables but I have been told the ARR cut them and there is an issue with the prime mover. For a locomotive that has seen every element and every kind of Alaskan weather,1000 looks good. Mike Gerenday, 5/5/21
