This GP35 (builder #30055) was acquired new in 1965. It was the lead
locomotive in a fiery train-truck collision on a rail crossing at Mile 57 of
the Anchorage-Fairbanks Highway on August 5, 1972. Thirty-six derailed
freight cars burned creating twin mile-high plumes of black smoke. Number
2503 was wrecked again on December 2, 1976 and was rebuilt as GP35u #3051 in
1977. (Anchorage, June 1972)
Note: 2503 acquired a solid sill stripe after the wreck that destroyed #1830
