Finishing resting place of steam locomotive #403
| The cab for ARR-403 is on the north side of the Matanuska River, about three miles from the current end of track in Palmer. The numbers "10" is plainly visible on the side facing the river where the wind driven sand has removed the later lettering. There is a good chance that the tender behind ARR-556, displayed in Anchorage, came from 403. Both locomotives were reported as destroyed in the Anchorage roundhouse fire, but 556 was eventually repaired and returned to service with a 400 class tender. |
