Pat Durand says of his photo, "The Alaska Railroad facilities in Anchorage had to be self-sufficient in the early years. One of the first structures built was this Lumber Storage Shed. Over each of the sliding doors is another door, hinged at the top and opened by a pulley and rope that lifts the door up under the eaves. The railroad also had a sawmill not to far from this location. I took this photo sometime in the 1960's. Jerry Ware, retired Alaska Railroad track welder, says the shed was leveled by a contractor in 1986. Demolition included the contents.

"This building was located about where the Princes Tours shops are today. The paint scheme is typical of the post war rehabilitation job. Prior to 1946 it would have been park service green with white trim."
