Portside The low winter light casts a warm glow on New Years Eve a decade ago as an Alaska Railroad GP38-2 goes about its chores in the Port of Anchorage. They had just run down to make a switch on some flats for military loading as this was during the height of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Alaskan based troops were supporting the war effort. This sign is inside the secure port area but as a railroad manager with a TWIC card and port access at the time I was able to get to this location for a photograph of the relatively new sign. Since this shot was taken the sign has changed at least twice and the Port of Anchorage was rebranded the Port of Alaska despite still being owned by the municipality. On this day Alaska's largest city would see only about 5 1/2 hours of daylight between sunrise and sunset. Anchorage, Alaska |
