Saturday At The Shop This original Alaska Railroad GP40-2, (EMD was built April 1975) bought new by the railroad in the first of three orders totalling 15 units, is resting inside the diesel shop on Electric Bay track 2 for heavy repair/rebuild. The unit will retain its as built 1970s US government era black and yellow paint once completed as the ARR does not have any painting facilities and there were none in the state at that time. Though that has since changed and two sister units were repainted in the state as of this writing nearly 14 years later 3001 is one three units left on the roster still wearing this scheme. To her left barely visible is the fluted stainless steel flank of one of the four Budd RDCs on the roster at this time, though all are long since gone. Anchorage, Alaska |
