The Talkeetna Mountains are a highly
scenic, but still relatively gentle mountain range. The area is well
suited for cross country hiking, skiing and snowmobiling. These mountains
are home to many large mammals including Dall sheep, caribou, grizzly bears,
black bears, wolves, wolverines, moose and mountain goats. Some of
the smaller mammals that inhabit the area are coyote, lynx, squirrels,
and snowshoe hares. Most of the Talkeetna Mountains are state-owned
land, and much of it is managed by the Department of Natural Resources
in the Hatcher Pass Management Area.
